Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's women's basketball team (15-11/9-5 WCC) was plagued with 25 turnovers in a loss to the Portland Pilots (13-14/5-9 WCC), 80-75, at the Chiles Center. The Gaels were led by Jermisha Dosty (Fair Oaks, CA), who finished with 21 points and 17 rebounds.
The Gaels struggled from the field for the second straight game. As a team SMC shot 7-for-28 from the floor (25.0 percent), topping a season low set on Thursday against Gonzaga. The Gaels committed seven turnovers within the first eight minutes of play to fall behind 15-5. The Pilots continued to run away leading by as much as 17 in the first half with 1:13 left to play. Saint Mary's would find themselves down 40-27 at the end of the first half.
In the second half the Gaels would slowly inch closer to the Pilots as Misha would control the boards and contribute with lay ups. At the 10:13 minutemark the Gaels would begin a 10-2 run, which would bring them within two. SMC would then tie the game at 62 after a steal and made lay up by Danielle Ferris (Eureka, CA) at the 4:15 mark. But it was the Pilots day in the sun as key baskets would give them their fifth victory in WCC action.
Besides Misha's 21, three other Gaels finished in double figures. Julie Morris (Moraga, CA) finished with 14 points, Jerkisha Dosty (Fair Oaks, CA) finished with 11 points and Katie Davis (Manson, WA) finished with 10 points. As a team the Gaels shot 43.9 percent from the field, 42.9 percent from behind the arc and 73.1 percent from the free throw line. The Gaels out-rebounded the Pilots 45-23.
The Gaels will begin the West Coast Conference tournament on Thursday, February 28 in San Diego and will receive the third seed. SMC will begin the tourney in a rematch against the Pilots at a time to be announced.
