Portland, OR- In a tightly contested non-conference match-up, the Saint Mary's women's tennis team (3-3) lost to the University of Portland. The singles match-ups were evenly split with each team taking three matches, the difference being Portland's 2-1 advantage in the doubles category to take the lone doubles point.
The Gaels struggled at the start of the doubles event, with losses at the number one and two spot. Catalina Fillol and Megan Schulman stormed back to capture the Gaels only doubles victory at the number three, 8-3.
The singles matches were balanced, with each team capturing three matches. Number two Valerie Verrier won at the number two spot, defeating Jana Jusupovic 6-0, 4-6, 6-3. Schulman won at the number four spot for the Gaels 6-3, 6-0. At the number five, Catalina Fillol captured her match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
The Gaels will next face Gonzaga at Portland on Thursday, February 7.
