
Volleyball To Face WCC Rival San Francisco

This Week: The Gaels will continue conference action when they travel to take on the San Francisco Lady Dons. Saint Mary's will square off against their cross-bay rival on Saturday, October 25 at 7:05 PM at the War Memorial Gym.
Last Week: Saint Mary's posted a record of 0-2 following two road matches against ranked WCC opponents San Diego and Santa Clara. Against the No. 18-ranked Toreros, the Gaels exhibited tremendous heart before falling by the final score of 3-1. The following evening, Saint Mary's struggled as they were defeated by No. 14-ranked Santa Clara by the final score of 3-0.
Player of the Week: Leading the Gaels last week was outside hitter Kaui Salzman. The San Diego, CA native contributed solid play in both WCC victories on the week. Salzman recorded a match-high in kills against San Diego and a match-high in kills against Santa Clara.
Against the Toreros, Salzman posted 11 kills and a match-high 21 digs. The next evening, the sophomore totaled a match-high 16 kills to go with her 11 digs and four block assists. For the conference season, Salzman has totled a double-double in kills and digs for each match. Making her performance even more stunning is four of her six matches have come against ranked opponents.
Pulling Rank: On the season, junior Lindsay Bogason is tied for the lead within the WCC for the highest single-match kill total after she recorded 32 kills against UC Irvine at the Sunset Classic.
Also ranking within the WCC is Kaui Salzman. The San Diego, CA native is third in the WCC for all matches with an average of 3.59 digs per game. The outside hitter also ranks tenth on the season with an average of 3.45 kills per game. Salzman also has a total of six double-doubles in conference matches on the season.
Wrapping up the individual WCC ranking is senior Jill Parmele. The Acampo, CA native is fourth on the season with an average of 5.40 points per game. The senior is also ranked fourth in the WCC on the season with an average of 4.71 kills per game.
Scouting the San Francisco Lady Dons: The Lady Dons come into their match-up with the Gaels possessing an overall record of 17-4 on the season and 2-4 in WCC play. San Francisco has recorded impressive victories over Air Force, Washington State, and Oklahoma.
Last week, the Lady Dons struggled as they were defeated in both of their conference matches against No. 14-ranked Santa Clara (3-0) and No. 17-ranked San Diego (3-0). This week the team will square-off against non-conference opponent Sacramento State on Tuesday, October 21 at 7:00 PM. The following evening the Lady Dons will host the Gaels at 7:05 PM.
One of the main factors in San Francisco's successes this season have stemmed from their senior leadership. Leading San Francisco on offense this season are seniors Brittanie Budinger and Teresa Russell. The experienced tandem have been solid all season for the Lady Dons as each are currently ranked in the top-10 within the WCC for kills per game. Budinger is third in the WCC with 4.91 kills per game while her counterpart, Russell, is currently eighth with 3.77 kills per game. Assisting San Franciso is setter April Scoggin. The senior is fifth in the conference with an average of 12.16 assists per game.
The Lady Dons defense will be anchored by Russell. The senior is currently tied for fifth in the conference with an average of 1.27 blocks per game. Also looking to contribute for San Francisco on defense will be Caroline Skacel. The senior is second on USF with an average of 3.23 digs per game.
Volleyball to host Youth/Club Volleyball Night: Members of local youth and club volleyball teams will have the opportunity to experience collegiate volleyball when the Gaels host "Youth/Club Volleyball Night" on Saturday, November 1. All youth and club volleyball players will receive complimentary admission to the game and will have the opportunity to participate in pre-game chalk talk and post-game autograph session with selected Saint Mary's players.
Next Week: Saint Mary's will play in a total of three matches, all at McKeon Pavilion on the Saint Mary's campus. The Gaels will open their week with a non-conference match-up against the San Jose State Spartans on Tuesday, October 28 at 7:05 PM. The Gaels last faced the Spartans on September 24 in San Jose where they were victorious by the final score of 3-0. The Gaels will then resume conference action on Friday, October 31 at 7:05 PM against No. 6-ranked Pepperdine. Saint Mary's will then wrap up their week as they host No. 21-ranked Loyola Marymount the following evening, Saturday, November 1 at 7:05 PM.
