Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's women's soccer team shut out the Sacramento State Hornets 2-0 on Thursday at Garaventa Field. Saint Mary's Sarah Burgess scored both goals for the Gaels, as they concluded non-conference play and improved to 4-6-1 overall. The Gaels begin West Coast Conference play on Sunday when the play the University of San Francisco at 1 p.m. in San Francisco.
The Gaels got on the board at the 16:28 mark in the first half, when junior forward Sarah Burgess scored her second goal of the season to give Saint Mary's a 1-0 lead. Burgess' goal came off an assist by Jill Anderson. Burgess scored her third goal of the season at the 60:35 mark in the second half off an assist by McKenna Belzer, giving the Gaels their 2-0 lead. Burgess finished the game with eight shots, six coming on goal and four points.
Saint Mary's goalkeeper Amaya Zabala added two saves and posted her first victory and first shutout of the year in goal. The Gaels out-shot the Hornets 15-3 and have out-shot their last two opponents 39-4.
The Gaels return to action Sunday when the face the USF Dons at 1 p.m. in San Francisco.
