Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's women's tennis team lost to the undefeated San Francisco Dons this Thursday in a tight match, 4-3. Saint Mary's won three of the six singles matches, and one of the three doubles matches. With the loss the Gaels fall to 5-3 while San Francisco improves to 6-0.
Saint Mary's was able to capture one of the doubles matches today, with team Verrier and Hunstock beating out Ruiz and Skogerboe of USF, 8-5. Unfortunately, the Dons won the other doubles matches for the point.
The Gaels played hard in singles, only to come up short. Lindsay Herndon-Ortega at the #6 spot gave SMC its first point of the night when she beat Courtney Chung in back to back sets 6-4, 7-6 (9-7). Kate Harden then added another point with the win at the #2 singles spot, defeating USF's Anna Skogerboe in three sets, 6-1, 5-7, 6-3.
Catalina Fillol had a thrilling match against Carey Savage, as the two battled it out late into the night. The match, which started hours earlier, was not finished until 8:00 PM when Fillol finally closed out her opponent in a tiebreak for the third set. Fillol jumped out early to take the first set, 7-6, followed by Savage's win in the second set 4-6. The last set was pushed to its limit until Fillol earned the victory 7-6 (7-5). Fillol gave SMC its final point of the match and improved Fillol's singles record at the #3 to 3-0.
"Fabulous effort," said Coach Alipaz regarding the match. "The match could have gone either way."
