Men's Golf Falls to Santa Clara In Match Play

Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's men's golf team opened their spring season when they were defeated by WCC foe, Santa Clara, today at the Contra Costa Country Club in match play. With each team only keeping their best four scores out of five players, the Gaels posted a team total of 301 strokes to the Broncos team total of 295 strokes.
In a highly contested match-up, the Gael golfers were evenly matched against the Broncos. After nine holes, Saint Mary's held a strong four stroke advantage over Santa Clara. However, the Broncos came back from behind to eventually defeat the Gaels with the help of freshman Michael Nicoletti who shot a match low of 69. Saint Mary's had not participated in a match or tournament since the fall when they played in the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate, while Santa Clara is coming off of a 10th place finish at the UC Irivine Anteater Invitational on February 10-11.
On the match for the Gaels, junior Brent Jensen was the low man for Saint Mary's, posting his second lowest round of the season with a 71. Sophomore Joe Lanza also played consistently as he posted a 73. 2002 First Team All-WCC Selection, John Chirila, also played well on the day as he shot a 77. Liam Kendregan, coming off of an injury, was the final recorded score for the Gaels as he posted a round of 80. Steven Brooks also posted an 80 for the Gaels, but with the match rules his score was not added to the team total.
Saint Mary's will return to the links as the set to play in the Highlander "Braveheart" Classic at the PGA Golf Club in Riverside, CA on Monday and Tuesday, March 3-4. Stroke totals Santa Clara University: 295, Saint Mary's College: 301
