Moraga, CA - On Friday, February 28, the Saint Mary's women's basketball team was defeated by the Pepperdine Waves, 89-74, in West Coast Conference action in McKeon Pavilion. With the loss the Gaels fall to 11-15, while the Waves improve to 20-6.
As Pepperdine began the game with an 8-2 run, the Gaels quickly retaliated to take a seven point lead with 11:07 remaining in the first half. The Gaels led by as much as eight with a 28-20 advantage at the 8:24 minute mark. The Waves would end the first half with a 25-5 run, to gain momentum and a huge lead going into halftime.
In the second half it would be all Pepperdine again as the Waves showed their dominance on the boards, out-rebounding the Gaels 52-28. Five Waves scored in double-figures as Keani Christianson led the charge with a 20-point effort to go along with her game-high 11 rebounds. The Gaels would get as close as nine points but Pepperdine proved why they are the WCC regular season champions.
Freshman Evynn Van Burger (Bend, OR) collected a career-high 19 points, while Triola Jackson (San Diego, CA) finished with 16 points and six rebounds, Lindsay Lopez (Antioch, CA) tallied 15 points and Carey Noakes (Piscatataway, NJ) ended with 11 points.
As a team, the Gaels shot 44.2 percent from the field, 42.1 percent from beyond the arc and 66.7 percent from the charity stripe.
The Gaels will continue WCC action when they host the Loyola Marymount Lions on Saturday, March 1. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:05 PM in McKeon Pavilion.
