Malibu, CA - Senior right hander Eric Bowden threw a complete-game five hitter and Saint Mary's took advantage of a pair of Pepperdine miscues to register a 7-1 victory over the Waves in the opener of a three-game West Coast Conference (WCC) series Friday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
Bowden (3-3) allowed an unearned run did not walk a batter and struck out four to help Saint Mary's improve to 11-12 overall, 2-1 in WCC play and snap a 13-game losing streak against Pepperdine (12-11, 3-1) dating back to the 2000 season.
The key moment in the game for Bowden came in the fifth inning with Saint Mary's leading 5-1. Sophomores Patrick Rooney and Nelson Caraballo opened the Waves' half of the inning with back-to-back singles. Pepperdine loaded the bases with no outs after Bowden fielded Cory Brightwell's sacrifice bunt and threw wide to third base allowing Rooney to be safe on the play.
However, solid defense helped Bowden out when first baseman Delaney Gallagher dove to his right to field a ground ball off the bat of David Uribes and threw out Rooney at the plate. Bowden then induced Kevin Estrada to hit into an inning-ending double play and escape the inning un-scored upon. He then went on to retire the final 12 batters of the game.
Saint Mary's scored five unearned runs in the third inning with two outs. The inning started when Mike Sansoe struck out and reached base on a passed ball. He then stole second advanced to third on a two-out single by Bryan Byrne and scored on a balk by Pepperdine starter Brandon Boesch (3-3). Tim Spooner followed with a double, and after Gallagher was hit by a pitch, Nick Conte doubled to left to drive in two runs and Adam Bellows followed with a bloop single to right field that plated two more runners and gave the Gaels a 5-0 lead.
Conte had three hits and a pair of RBI to lead a 14-hit attack by Saint Mary's.
The two teams continue their three-game series on Saturday with a 1 p.m. contest at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
