Kingston, N.Y. - Junior attacker Colette Spencer scored six goals, including four in the opening period, as the Saint Mary's women's lacrosse team posted an 11-9 non-conference victory over Albany on Sunday morning at Dietz Memorial Stadium.
Saint Mary's (5-8) led 9-5 in the second half, when Spencer converted a free-position shot with 20:00 remaining. However, Albany (2-10) rallied with four the game's next five goals. Erin Pemrick and Jenn Rajczak scored 13 seconds apart to draw their team within 10-9 with 4:38 to play. Pemrick drove from behind the cage, before Rajczak finished off a fastbreak after her team won the draw.
The Gaels, who are beginning a four-game eastern swing, held their lead in the stretch. Senior goalkeeper Megan Ceccotti made one of her 12 saves by stopping Maria Ferrucci's free-position attempt with 2:20 left. Freshman Caitlin Hungate then tallied her second goal of the game for insurance in the final minute when she fired a shot inside the left post.
The Great Danes, who dropped their fifth straight, regrouped from an early four-goal deficit to close within 5-4 on Ferrucci's goal from the left side. But Spencer, who is among the nation's leaders with 41 goals on the season, converted two driving shots in the final five minutes of the period for a 7-4 halftime lead.
Rajzcak and Domenica LoRe each scored a pair of goals, while Amanda Heller stopped 12 shots in the cage. Ferrucci and Andrea Esposito accounted for one goal and two assists apiece.
