Irvine, CA- The Saint Mary's women's volleyball team started off the Sunset Classic with a win tonight against Florida State by a final score of 3-2. The five game match was a first for Saint Mary's this season. Game scores for the Gaels victory over the Seminoles were 30-16, 30-24, 26-30, 27-30 and 15-10. With the win Saint Mary's improved its overall record to 6-3, while Florida State fell to 4-3.

Saint Mary's power game eventually overwhelmed the Seminoles. The Gaels .259 attacking percentage to that of the Seminoles .176 proved to be a large factor in the victory.

Leading the way for the Gaels was Jill Parmele and Kaui Salzman who each recorded a double-double in kills and digs against Florida State. Parmele, a senior, led the way with 20 kills and 11 digs. For the match, Parmele also totaled two block assists and two aces. Salzman, a sophomore, also provided solid play by posting 20 kills and 15 digs. Salzman also finished with one block assist and one ace.

Also helping the Gaels to victory over the Seminoles were freshmen Cassandra Kolkka and Mandy Bible. Kolkka led the Gaels in digs with a match-high total of 19, while Bible recorded a double-double in assists and digs by posting a match-high 57 assists and 10 digs.

Wrapping up the rest of Saint Mary's major contributors were Lindsey Bogason and Erin Gravert. Bogason finished the match with a total of nine kills and 11 digs to help the Gaels. Gravert also played well with a total of eight kills and six block assists.

Saint Mary's will resume action tomorrow, September 13 as they prepare to take on host UC Irvine at 11:00 AM in the second game of the Sunset Classic. That evening, the Gaels will then play their final match of the tournament against Houston at 5:00 PM.
