
Volleyball Captures 2003 TCU Molten Invitational Title

Fort Worth, TX- The Saint Mary's women's volleyball defeated host TCU by the final score of 3-0 to take the championship match of the 2003 TCU Molten Invitational. Game scores of the Gaels victory over the Horned Frogs were 30-19, 30-22, and 30-28. With the victory the Gaels captured their third tournament title of the season and now possess an overall record of 13-4 while the Horned Frogs fell to 13-4.
Once again the Gaels offense exploded to carry the Gaels to victory. The team dominated much of the match by finishing with a 54 kills and 54 assists. The Gaels helped themselves by finishing with a .400 attacking percentage to the Horned Frogs .187. Saint Mary's defense also stepped up big with a total of 14 block assists to TCU's four.
Leading the defense was Erin Gravert. The sophomore finished with a match-high four block assists and two solo blocks. Gravert also posted five kills and one digs. Also contributing on defense was Lindsey Bogason who was second with three block assists against the Horned Frogs. Bogason also recorded eight kills, one ace, and five digs.
Taking control on offense were Kaui Salzman, Jill Parmele and Mandy Bible. Salzman finished with 15 kills to go with her two aces, six digs, and one block assist. Parmele finished with a match-high 19 kills and also recorded five digs to go with two block assists. Wrapping up the Gaels offensive attack was Bible. The freshman recorded a match-high 47 assists against TCU.
Also making a positive contribution was Cassandra Kolkka. The freshman finished with a match-high 14 digs and three assists for the Gaels.
The Gaels dominance at the 2003 TCU Molten Invitational was overtly obvious as the team never lost a game in a total of four matches on the weekend. Saint Mary's now has its' most wins in more than a decade. The last time the Gaels won at least 13 matches was during the 1990 season when the team finished with an overall record of 13-19. Head coach Jon Stevenson also reached a milestone when the Gaels defeated TCU. With the victory Stevenson now possesses and overall record of 22-22 as the head coach at Saint Mary's. His .500 winning percentage is only second to that of Joan Tamblim's (1982-1987) .688. However, it is the highest winning percentage since the Gaels moved to Division I play in 1987.
The Gaels will next travel to Southern California to take on WCC foe Loyola Marymount on Friday, October 3 at 7:05 PM.
