Jon Stevenson Joins Olympic Qualifying Volleyball Team in Puerto Rico

Moraga, CA - Second-year Saint Mary's women's head volleyball coach Jon Stevenson has joined the United States Men's National Volleyball Team in the Norceca Zone Olympic Qualifying tournament in Puerto Rico. Stevenson is currently serving as a volunteer assistant coach under the guidance of head coach Doug Beal and assistant coach Carl McGowan.
Stevenson, who led the Saint Mary's women's volleyball team to its first ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2003, will help the USA National Team, which is said to be the highest technical level played in the world, qualify for the 2004 Summer Olympics. In order for the USA men's volleyball team to qualify for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, they must win this qualifying tournament, which runs from January 6-10.
The USA men's volleyball team has already secured the No. 1 seed in the tournament after winning its first three matches. USA defeated Mexico 3-0 on Monday, then followed that with a 3-1 victory over Cuba on Tuesday and a 3-0 win over Canada on Wednesday. Team USA will play its final round robin contest against Puerto Rico on Thursday night. The semifinals of the five-team tournament is scheduled to begin on Friday with the No.1 and No. 4 seeds and the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds playing against each other. The finals will take place on Saturday.
Under the guidance of head coach Doug Beal, who was the head coach for the 1984 Olympic gold medal team, Stevenson will be able to learn skills to bring back to the Saint Mary's women's volleyball program. Stevenson will also learn from his mentor Carl McGown, who is a two-time NCAA Championship coach from BYU. Stevenson will use this opportunity to further develop his coaching skills in an effort to lead SMC to another 20-win season and another NCAA Tournament appearance next season.
