
Baseball Opens Series With Victory Over San Diego

Moraga, CA - Freshman right hander Bryan Oland shut down the San Diego Toreros for 7 1/3 innings, giving up two hits and no earned runs and freshman Allan Lobban relieved Oland to pick up his first save of the year as Saint Mary's beat the Toreros 3-2 on Friday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field. With the win the Gaels improve to 2-2 in West Coast Conference play and 7-18 overall. San Diego fell to 1-6 in WCC action and 12-15 overall.
Saint Mary's jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning after back-to-back doubles by Delaney Gallagher and Sam Carter. The Gaels added to their lead in the fourth inning when Adam Bellows hit a solo home run.
While the Gaels put up two early runs, Oland was shutting down the Toreros' bats. Oland allowed two hits and no earned runs over 7 1/3 innings, while striking out three batters and walking two. Lobban pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowing two hits and no earned runs.
The Gaels added their final run of the game in the sixth inning after Bellows reached base with a two-out bunt single. Gallagher singled to left and Carter hit a clutch two-out single up the middle to score Bellows.
San Diego managed to score to unearned runs, one in the seventh inning while Oland was in the game and one in the eighth inning with Lobban on the mound.
Offensively, Bellows, Gallagher and Carter each had two hits; Carter added two RBI and Bellows added one RBI.
Saint Mary's returns to action on Saturday, March 27 when it hosts San Diego at 1 p.m. at Louis Guisto Field.
