Baseball Falls in Series Opener to Cal

Berkeley, CA - The Saint Mary's baseball team dropped their first game of a three-game series against California 9-2 on Friday afternoon at Evans Diamond in Berkeley, CA. The loss drops Saint Mary's to 3-14, while the Bears improved to 9-10.
Cal scored eight runs in the first and second innings off of Saint Mary's starter Bryan Oland (2-3, 7.0 innings, nine hits, eight earned runs, two walks, two strikeouts). The Bears were led by a solo home run in the first inning by freshman designated hitter Chris Errecart, and a solo home run by freshman catcher Garrett Bussiere and a three-run homer by senior center fielder David Weiner in the second inning. Cal scored its other runs on a RBI ground out by Weiner in the first inning, a RBI single by senior shortstop Jeff Dragicevich in the second inning and a fielding error by Gael shortstop Gilbert Gil in the second inning. The Bears tacked on their ninth run with a RBI single by senior right fielder Brian Horwitz in the third inning.
The Gaels got their runs on a RBI single by Bryan Byrne in the fifth inning and a sacrifice fly by Gil in the sixth inning. Delaney Gallagher was 3-for-4 with a double for Saint Mary's as well.
Saint Mary's will host Cal on Saturday, March 6 at 1 p.m. at Louis Guisto field in the second game of the series. The two teams return to Evans Diamond, Sunday, March 7 at 1 p.m.
