Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's volleyball team signed Buchanan High School (Clovis, CA) senior outside hitter Melissa Stidham to a National Letter of Intent on Monday, April 19. Stidham will join the team in the fall for the 2004 season.
Stidham, from Fresno, CA, is currently a senior at Buchanan High School in Clovis, CA. Stidham will join former teammate at Buchanan and current Gael Cassandra Kolkka on next year's team.
While at Buchanan, Stidham led her team to the 2003 Valley Championship and finished runner-up in 2002. The 5-10 Stidham was also named to the All-League First Team in 2001 and 2003 and was named the league Most Valuable Player in 2002. During her senior season she was also named to the Durango and Clovis All Tournament teams and to the All-Metro team.
Stidham, who goes by Missie, was also recruited by Oregon State, San Diego, Pepperdine, Texas and Miami. Stidham played outside hitter at Buchanan and has the ability to play several positions at Saint Mary's.
"I am very excited to have Missie Stidham join our program. She has developed tremendously both as a volleyball player and as a student since we began the recruiting process," head coach Jon Stevenson said. "As I look ahead to the upcoming season and beyond, I am projecting Missie to be a big part of our future."
The Gaels are coming off the school's first NCAA Tournament appearance and finished 2003 with a school record 20 wins.
