Los Angeles, CA - The Saint Mary's baseball team dropped their second straight game to the Loyola Marymount Lions 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Page Stadium in Los Angeles. The Gaels received an excellent pitching performance by freshman Allan Lobban but couldn't pull out the victory. With the loss the Gaels fall to 3-5 in West Coast Conference action and 8-21 overall. LMU improved to 9-2 to lead the Coast Division and 18-12-1 overall.
LMU (18-12-1, 9-2 WCC) and Saint Mary's (8-21, 3-5 WCC) found themselves involved in a classic pitcher's duel between Stephen Kahn (4-1) and Gaels' starter Allan Lobban (0-5).
Lobban on the other hand cruised through the first two innings retiring the first six batters he faced. Then in the bottom of third the Lions got to Lobban for the first time when Jonathan Oller worked a leadoff walk to open up the frame. Oller moved to second when Anthony Santana singled to center for the Lions' first hit of the afternoon. Anthony Soto would bat next and move the runners up a base with a perfect sacrifice bunt. That brought up Billy Lockin who singled to right field to break the scoreless tie and give LMU a 1-0 lead. James Cooper came up next and delivered home Santana with a sacrifice fly to right field and the Lions had a 2-0 lead.
After receiving some run support Kahn took over the rest of the way. Jonathan Higashi helped out his battery mate by throwing out a base runner trying to steal second base in the fourth. Kahn cruised through the next three innings allowing just a walk and retiring nine out of ten batters over that span. Then in the eighth inning he pitched around an error and a two out single by getting Delaney Gallagher to ground out with the tying runs aboard.
Kahn went the distance scattering six hits, walking just two, while striking out 10. In a game that took just over two hours to complete, Lobban was the tough luck loser as he too pitched a complete game, allowing only five hits and a walk over eight innings of work.
Saint Mary's returns to action on Sunday when it wraps up a three-game series against the Lions at 1 p.m. at Page Stadium.
