Women's Soccer Blanks #23 Cal Poly 1-0

Sept. 7, 2004

Moraga, CA- Saint Mary's junior forward Genevieve Hollis scored a first half goal and the Gael defense did the rest as SMC defeated no. 23-ranked Cal Poly 1-0 Tuesday afternoon in Saint Mary's Stadium. With the win, Saint Mary's improves to 4-1-0 on the season while Cal Poly drops to 2-1-1.

Without many chances in the first half, Hollis took advantage of a McKenna Belzer through ball. Belzer's pass split the defense in the penalty area and Hollis didn't hesitate to slip it far post past the Mustangs goalkeeper Liz Hill at the 34th minute.

For Hollis, the goal marks her third in two games and is the third straight for Saint Mary's. Belzer's assist is her second on the season.

With the victory over Cal Poly, which is ranked 23rd in the NSCAA poll, freshman goalkeeper Andrea Lee earned her second shutout and fourth victory by blanking the Mustangs 1-0. En route to the shutout over the Mustangs, the newcomer recorded six saves.

In the second half, the Gaels had some early opportunities with Hollis and Belzer working together up top. Freshman defender Stephanie Harrison also created some opportunities on some long runs from the backfield. The Gaels managed seven shots with five on goal in the contest while the Mustangs took 11, eight of them came in the first half.

The Gael defense comprised of Harrison, Sarah Churchill, Allison Kop and Joelle Gizzi stymied a Mustang attack that was averaging three goals a game. Cal Poly's leading goal-scorer Sharon Day was held to only one shot.

Offensively, SMC was led by Hollis and senior midfielder Sarah Burgess. Hollis recorded two shots, both being on goal, while Burgess got off two shots with one being on goal.

The Gaels will be back in action on Friday, September 10 when they host San Jose State in the Saint Mary's Tournament at 4:00 p.m. SMC will then close its tournament against Colgate on Sunday, September 12 at 11:00 a.m.
