Women's Basketball Falls to Ball State

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's women's basketball team played step-for-step with the Ball State Cardinals for 35 minutes, but couldn't keep up with the visitors down the stretch as Ball State left McKeon Pavilion with a 63-52 on Thursday night.
Saint Mary's led Ball State 42-41 with 8 minutes, 46 seconds left in the game after an Eghosa Obaiza layup, but the Cardinals went on a 22-10 run to close the game and take home the victory.
With the loss the Gaels fall to 4-8 on the season, while Ball State improved to 7-3. Saint Mary's hosts Sacramento State on Saturday, December 31 at 1:05 p.m. at McKeon Pavilion.
Offensively the Gaels were led by sophomore Serena Benavente, who had 13 points, including two 3-pointers in 29 minutes of action. Sophomore Monica Mertle had 12 points off the bench in 21 minutes of action.
Maija Lahde had seven points and Jontelle Smith added five points.
As a team the Gaels shot 40.9 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from 3-point range. Saint Mary's was also 10-of-11 from the free throw line, but committed 20 turnovers. Ball State shot 44 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range.
The Cardinals were led by Tina Bolte, who had a game-high 20 points, including 6-of-9 from the 3-point line.
