Moraga, CA - Saint Mary's senior centerfielder Mike Sansoe was drafted in the 18th round of the Major League Baseball draft on Tuesday afternoon, going 548 overall to the San Diego Padres, making him the third Saint Mary's player drafted on the day. Saint Mary's junior Bryan Byrne and fall signee Dylan Johnston were drafted earlier in the day.
Sansoe, from Walnut Creek, CA, raised his stock his senior year, having a break out season, while being named to the Second Team All-West Coast Conference.
"It feels good. It's been a lifelong dream to get a chance to play at the professional level," Sansoe said. "To comeback under a new coach and play to my potential was a good way to end my career."
Sansoe's career season starts with his team-leading .352 batting average and a team-leading seven home runs. Sansoe also scored 35 runs, had 11 doubles, three triples, 20 RBI, 11 walks and six steals.
The 6-0, 190 pound right handed hitting Sansoe was one of the fastest on the team and his three triples led the West Coast Conference. Sansoe also shows excellent range in centerfield, another plus for the senior.
Saint Mary's had potential shortstop Dylan Johnston, from Hamilton High School in Arizona drafted in the fourth round by the Chicago Cubs and junior Bryan Byrne was drafted in the 12th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
