Women's Soccer Defeats Anteaters 3-2 in Overtime

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's women's soccer team used an own goal at the 95:40 mark to defeat the UC Irvine Anteaters 3-2 on sudden victory overtime on Sunday afternoon from Saint Mary's Stadium. Saint Mary's scored the game-winning goal when Nikki Schrey's cross to Katie Frattone was deflected by a UC Irvine defender into the goal.

Saint Mary's took a 1-0 advantage when Gen Hollis scored her first goal of the season in the 14th minute of action. Stefani Rocco made a long pass to Frattone, who flicked the ball over the UCI defense. With UC Irvine's goalie Erin Henry extended from the goal, Hollis took a shot from 30 yards out and found left corner of the net.

UCI evened the score at 1-1, when Britney Webster scored on a direct free kick from 25 yards out at the 27:51 minute mark of the game. Following a foul on SMC, Webster's shot missed the SMC wall and found the middle of the Gaels' goal.

SMC regained the lead when Frattone scored her first goal of the season at the 52:58 mark. Following a foul on UCI, the free kick was played into the Anteaters penalty box. After being knocked around by a both SMC and UCI players, Frattone gathered the loose ball and chipped a shot over the head of Henry for the go ahead goal.

The overtime session was set up when UC Irvine's Megan Ortiz evened the score at 2-2 at the 78:07 minute mark, with her second goal of the season. The goal by Ortiz came off a through pass from Frankee Kelly, as Ortiz got behind the SMC defense. In a one-on-one opportunity, Ortiz beat SMC keeper Andrea Lee with a shot inside the right post.

Lee picked up the win for SMC as she collected four saves against 13 shots by UCI. Henry took the loss for the Anteaters as she played the entire game as well and collected four saves against 16 shots from the Gaels.

Saint Mary's will return to action on Friday, September 2 when the Gaels travel to Berkeley, CA to compete in the California Tournament. The Gaels will open the event against UC Santa Barbara on Friday at 2 pm and then will finish the event against Montana on Sunday, September 4 against Montana at Noon. Both games will be played at Edwards Stadium on the California campus.
