Moraga, CA - Saint Mary's head men's basketball coach Randy Bennett has announced that David Patrick will be promoted to an assistant coaching position. Patrick served as the Director of Basketball Operations during the 2006-07 season, and was promoted to assistant coach following the departure of Lamont Smith, who resigned his position to take a similar position at Santa Clara.
"David has done a great job helping the program in the short time that he's been at Saint Mary's. David has an outstanding basketball background, and will be a big asset to our program, both on the court and in the area of recruiting."
Patrick came to Saint Mary's in 2006 from Nicholls State where he served as an assistant coach for the 2005-06 season. Bermuda born, Patrick joined the coaching ranks in 2005 after playing four years of professional basketball overseas, playing in Australia, England and Spain.
Patrick began his collegiate playing days at Syracuse, where he was a member of the 1996 NCAA Final Four Championship team that finished as the national runner up. He then transferred to Louisiana-Lafayette where he was the point guard from 1997-2000 and graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice.
Smith departs from Saint Mary's after spending six years on the bench with Bennett. During that time, Saint Mary's posted a 102-83 record, and over the past five seasons, SMC posted a 93-63 record, marking the most wins in a five-year stretch in the history of the program.
"Lamont has been a big part of the resurgence of the Saint Mary's men's basketball program over the past six seasons. I've worked with Lamont over the past eight years, both at Saint Mary's and Saint Louis, and he's an outstanding coach. He will be missed at Saint Mary's and I wish him and his family the very best."
The loss of Smith marks the first change in the coaching staff at Saint Mary's since Bennett took over prior to the 2001 season.
