Kyle Jensen Named to 2009 Brooks Wallace Player of the Year Award

Lubbock, TX – Junior outfielder Kyle Jensen has been named to the 2009 Brooks Wallace Player of the Year pre-season watch list. The Wallace Award is presented annually to the nations top collegiate baseball player in conjunction with the College Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremonies, Jensen is one of 64 players to be named to the pre-season watch list.
Jensen looks to follow up last season's record breaking year with an equally impressive junior campaign, in which he set a Saint Mary's record for single season batting average hitting .421 with 13 homeruns, on his way to being named an ABCA/Rawlings All-American, and a Rivals.com Second Team All-American.
The Wallace Award is dedicated to the memory of former Texas Tech player and assistant coach Brooks Wallace. Wallace was a slick-fielding shortstop at Texas Tech from 1977 to 1980. A four-year starter, he was named All-Southwest Conference and All-District his senior year. He led the Red Raiders to their first-ever appearance in the Southwest Conference Tournament in 1980.
After playing two years in the Texas Rangers organization, he returned to Texas Tech and served as a graduate assistant and later as an assistant coach. In the summer of 1984, he was diagnosed with cancer and fought the disease courageously until his death on March 24, 1985. Past winners include 2008 winner Buster Posey from Florida State, and 2007 winner David Price from Vanderbilt.
The Gaels will begin their 2009 season on Friday, February 20th at 2:00 PM, when the Gaels host the University of Oregon here at Louis Guisto Field.
