#2 Nick Allred: 2-for-4, 1 R, 3 RBI vs. LMU
BSB | Gaels Pull Out Gutsy Sunday Win to Sweep Lions in LA
5/10/2026 6:11:00 PM | Baseball
LOS ANGELES - The Saint Mary's baseball team got some clutch late-game pitching performances to hold off LMU and take Sunday's series finale 6-3, clinching the West Coast Conference series sweep at Page Stadium.
The Gaels' offense plated four runs in the second inning to jump out to another early lead but got some huge insurance runs with a two-run triple from first-year Gael Nick Allred in the top of the ninth to put Saint Mary's (29-21, 14-10) up 6-3. It was an all hands on deck type of day as Eric Valenzuela used five different pitches to grind out the three-run victory. Redshirt freshman Diego Emerling completed the seventh inning before Arizona State transfer David Roberts came in and looked dominant, earning the two-inning save with five strikeouts including three in the bottom of the ninth to seal the win. SMC pitching held the Lions to three runs off eight hits and struck out a game high nine batters.
Saint Mary's finished the afternoon with nine hits but had two-hit performances from Ian Josephson and Nick Allred to lead the charge. Allred went 2-for-4 and tied his season high with three RBI as he put together some terrific at bats in what was his 18th start of the season. Diego Castellanos also extended his season long hit streak to an impressive 26 games after a two-RBI single back in the second inning.
A wild Sunday in the WCC came to an end and featured an 11-11 tie between San Diego and Pacific, giving the Tigers the solo third place spot in the conference standings as of today. The Gaels are still just a game out of second and a half game behind Pacific in fourth place with one conference series to play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Graduate transfer Jake Hilton got the ball for his tenth start of the season on Sunday and worked out of some big jams before departing after two innings of work. Hilton induced an inning ending double play to Ian Josephson at third to get out of a bases load jam in the first. Hilton put two on again in the bottom of the second but traded an out for a run to allow just one to score as the Gaels led 4-1 through two full innings.
The four runs for Saint Mary's would come in that second inning as the Gaels plated four off five hits. SF State transfer Nick Allred got the start in left and rifled an RBI single back up the middle to score Josephson for the game's first run. After an infield single from Brett Williams to put runners on first and second, Cody Kashimoto would yank a double down the right field line to score Allred and double the Gaels lead. The four-run frame would come to a close with a clutch two-out two-RBI single from Diego Castellanos to extend his hit streak to 26 games.
LMU (12-41, 3-21) continued to chip away slowly but surely as the Gaels went into their bullpen with a pair of freshmen in Max Johnson and Cooper Berger. Johnson worked through two innings allowing one run off two hits while Berger completed the fifth and sixth also allowing just one run and getting some solid defense behind him including a ground ball double play in the sixth to preserve a 4-3 lead.
Diego Emerling made his tenth appearance of the season in maybe his biggest spot of the year, working around a pair of walks in the seventh to toss a clean frame and send the Gaels into the final two innings with a one-run lead. Insurance would come from the Gaels' best hitter of the day in Nick Allred as he rifled a triple into the right field corner in the top of the eighth to score Jared Mettam and Ian Josephson, giving Saint Mary's a 6-3 lead. David Roberts closed the game with two electric innings of work, striking out a game high five batters including the side in the ninth to earn his first career save.
Saint Mary's completed its third conference sweep of the season and has now won five straight games over the Lions dating back to 2025.
