STANFORD, Calif. - The Saint Mary's baseball team plated three runs in the ninth and matched Stanford's hit total with 13 on the evening but their late-game rally would come to an end as the Cardinal induced a 4-3 ground ball double play to end the game and hang on for the 7-6 victory.
The Gaels battled with now ACC member Stanford Tuesday evening at Sunken Diamond. The Cardinal did their scoring in bunches, plating three runs in the second and three more in the third to jump out to a 6-0 lead. Saint Mary's got quality relief innings from southpaw Joseph Moreno to keep the deficit at six, completing two scoreless frames and allowing just one hit. Saint Mary's got on the board with three runs in the top of the sixth including a two-run moon shot from Jacob Johnson for his 11th homer of the season. Stanford nearly relinquished a 7-3 lead in the ninth but got a clutch 4-3 ground ball double play to end the Gaels rally and hang on for the 7-6 victory.
The top three hitters in the lineup for the Gaels combined for six hits including a two-hit ballgame from Diego Castellanos, extending his hit streak to 27 games. Redshirt sophomore catcher Brett Williams also rattled off a game high three hits out of the eight-spot for the Gaels as they hit .333 from the plate as a team Tuesday night and continue their historic pace at the plate with a now .335 season average.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Junior transfer Luis Martin Romero made his first start as a Gael Tuesday night. Romero pitched to contact and tossed a clean first inning but Stanford was able to load the bases and bump Romero from the game, scoring three runs in the second inning. Noah Waldeck came in and struck out Cardinal power hitter Rintaro Sasaki to leave the bases loaded and keep the deficit at three.
Saint Mary's would not get on the scoreboard until the sixth inning but did so with five hits and a high arching two-run homer from Jacob Johnson for his 11th of the season. Makoa Sniffen singled home Diego Castellanos earlier in the inning as the Gaels cut the deficit in half. Stanford added one more in the seventh to take a 7-3 lead into the ninth but the Gaels got the offense going again, cracking double-digit hits with four in the inning and scoring three runs to make it a one-run ballgame in a blink of an eye.
Williams legged out an infield single to the third baseman and then Nick Allred continued his hot hitting with a pinch-hit single into left to put the first two runners on base. The lineup would turn over for Tanner Griffith and Diego Castellanos as the pair recorded back-to-back RBI hits to score three runs. Griffith hit his 16th double of the season while Castellanos slapped a single into left for his second of the night to score Griffith from second. Stanford would remain with reliever Kassius Thomas who started the inning as he would then induce a hard hit ground ball double play to end the game, sealing the 7-6 midweek victory.
