Santa Clara, CA - The No. 50 Saint Mary's women's tennis team posted a 6-1 win over the Santa Clara Broncos on Sunday afternoon. The No. 50 ranked Gaels defeated the Broncos in doubles, 2-1, while recording five wins in singles action. The match marked the Gaels first dual-match against a West Coast Conference opponent.
Saint Mary's began the match by winning two out of three doubles competitions. At the No. 1 position the experienced pair of Jessica Hoath and Nienke Strijbis defeated Santa Clara's Myra Davoudi and Lindsay McBride, 8-4. While Erin Young and Alex Poorta made quick work of Carmen Pham and Courtney Hull, 8-0.
Saint Mary's brought their doubles' momentum into singles play, as five out of six Gaels posted wins. At the No. 1 and 2 positions Hoath and Poorta defeated their opponents with ease, 6-2, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-1 respectively. Marah Calvo played at the No. 3 position for Saint Mary's, defeating Santa Clara's McBride 6-3, 6-2. Stef Ordoveza edged Ashley Pane 6-3, 7-6 at the No. 4 spot, while Feline Charlot posted her third straight win at the No. 6 spot, defeating Courtney Hull 6-3, 6-4.
The Gaels improved to 5-1 overall with the win over the Broncos, with their only loss coming to No. 3 ranked Stanford.
Saint Mary's returns to action against the San Francisco Dons in their first home match of the 2008 season. The match is scheduled for Friday, February 22 at 3:00 PM in Moraga, CA at the Korth Tennis Complex.
