Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's women's tennis team (6-1) recorded another win against a fellow West Coast Conference member, as they defeated San Francisco 5-2 on Monday afternoon. The Gaels are 4-0 against WCC opponents this year, as they have posted wins over Gonzaga, Portland, Santa Clara, and San Francisco.
The day began with Erin Young and Alex Poorta dominating the Don's Jenny Sperry and Sarah Oudomvilay, 8-2 at the No. 3 doubles position. The next pair to finish was Marah Calvo and Stef Ordoveza, defeating their opponents 8-5, and clinching the doubles point for the Gaels. At the number one position, Jessica Hoath and Nienke Strijbis battled against Cecilia Gratian and Jennifer-Le Heinser, but were unable to record the win, falling 8-6.
In singles action Alex Poorta, Stef Ordoveza, Claire Soper, and Marah Calvo each recorded wins. Soper, a freshman from Arizona, handled her opponent with ease, finishing the day with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Cecilia Gratian at the No. 3 position. Fellow freshman, Poorta, recorded her second win of the day, as she was victorious at the No. 2 position against Mylene Martin, 6-2, 6-4.
Calvo and Ordoveza each blanked their opponents in one set, as Calvo defeated Jenny Sperry 6-4, 6-0 and Ordoveza won 6-0, 6-3 over Jessy Mekpoh.
Senior Jessica Hoath (No. 47) and sophomore Nineke Strijbis were unable to capture their singles matches, as they were narrowly defeated in each of their competitions. Both of their matches extended to three sets, and were cut short due to lighting. Hoath was topped by Heinser, 6-1, 0-6, 1-0, while Strijbis dropped her match to Oudomvilay, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0.
The Gaels return to action on February 26, as they look to extend their record to 7-1 against San Jose State at 2:00 pm in San Jose, CA.
