Stockton, CA - The No. 58 Saint Mary's women's tennis team picked up their first dual-match win of the 2008 season; recording a 6-1 win over the Pacific Tigers. The Gaels swept the Tigers in doubles action, with all three pairs posting wins over their opponents.
Senior Jessica Hoath and sophomore Nienke Strijbis grasped an 8-7(5) win over Pacific's Jolanta Twarowska and Olga Gumenyuk at the number one position, while the duo of Marah Calvo and Stef Ordoveza defeated Svenja Arens and Sasaha Fisher 8-3. The freshman pair of Claire Soper and Alex Poorta rounded out the doubles wins, taking down Clara Schuhmacher and Kateryna Nezhura, 8-4.
In singles action Saint Mary's posted five wins, with the number two through six positions recording wins. Poorta and Soper each defeated their opponents at the number two and three positions respectively, with Poorta defeating Svenja Arens 6-4, 7-5, and Soper making quick work of Olga Gumenyuk 6-0, 6-0.
At the number four position Calvo easily handled the Tigers' Kateryna Nezhura, registering a 6-0, 6-1 win. Strijbis and Ordoveza finished-up singles play with two wins, as Strijbis took down Clara Schuhmacher in a close set, 7-5, 6-4, and Ordoveza topped Sasha Fisher 6-3, 6-4.
The Gaels return to action on Thursday, February 7 as they travel to Portland for a 10:00 am match. Following the match against the West Coast Conference member, Saint Mary's travels to Eugene, OR where they face the Oregon ducks on Friday, February 8 at 12:00 pm.
