Portland, OR - The 59th-ranked Saint Mary's Gaels defeated the Portland Pilots by a 6-1 margin in a West Coast Conference women's tennis dual match at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center on Thursday. The Gaels swept doubles-action, with all three pairs picking up the win against the Pilots.

The Gaels (2-0) took early control with a hard fought doubles point and then secured the victory with wins at the top three singles positions.

The team of Jessica Hoath and Nienke Strijbis edged the Pilots Megan Sporndli and Lindsey Griffin, 8-5 in doubles action, while Marah Calvo and Stef Ordoveza defeated the Pilots by score of 8-6, beating Jenna Tanzer and Stefanie Doolittle. Junior Erin Young and freshman Alex Poorta paired up for the first time this season, making easy work of their doubles match, taking down Anna Gullickson and Audree Jenks, 8-3.

Saint Mary's won their number one through four positions in singles, with Poorta and Soper dominating their opponents 6-2, 6-3 and 6-2, 6-1 respectively. The set marks the second win at the number two position for Poorta, while Soper recorded her first win at the number three position.

Hoath, Calvo, and Ordoveza each picked up singles wins against the Pilots, with Hoath defeating Megan Sporndli at the number one position in a tight match, 7-5, 6-4.

Calvo's match against Christina Feyen was a battle from the start, with Calvo winning the first set, 7-5, and then falling to the Pilot 2-6. In the final set Calvo bounced-back to grasp the win, edging Feyen by a score of 10-8.

Rounding out singles wins was Stef Ordoveza. Like Calvo, Ordoveza was tested late, as she dropped the first set of the match, 4-6 to Portland's Stefanie Doolittle. But Odoveza was not about to give-up, as she came back to dominate in the second, 6-2. Once again the final set would be a head-to-head dual, as Ordoveza narrowly defeated Doolittle 10-7.

The Gaels return to action on Friday, February 8 at 12:00 pm, as they face the Oregon Ducks in Eugene, OR.
