Stanford, CA - The Saint Mary's men's tennis team was unable to upset the No. 28 Stanford Cardinal, as they were defeated 6-1. In doubles play the Gaels came out strong, earning victories at the No. 1 and 2 positions, but it would not carry over as they would be swept in singles action.
Joel Kusnierz and Lucas Tirelli teamed up to earn the Gaels' first victory of the day, defeating Alex Clayton and Blake Muller at the No. 1 position, 8-3. At the three spot Saint Mary's was unable to defeat the Cardinal, leaving the deciding match to No. 2. Fortunately for the Gaels Achim Christner and Marek Dvorak stepped up to the challenge, clinching the doubles point with an 8-6 win over Kevin Kaiser and Ted Kelly.
In singles play Saint Mary's was unable to find their rhythm, as all but one Gael fell in two sets. Dvorak's match at No. 3 was the closest competition of the day, forcing Blake Muller into a three set battle. Muller recorded the first win 6-3, but Dvorak responded with a decisive 6-2 victory, extending the match to a third and final set. Unfortunately the senior was unable to grasp the final set, falling 6-3.
The Gaels will finish the regular season as they travel to southern California to face Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount. Saint Mary's will first challenge the No. 13 Waves on Saturday, April 12 at 9:00 AM, and will then take on the Lions on April 13 at 11:00 AM.
