Saint Mary's Rowing Frequently Asked Questions for Recruits
Q. How often does the team practice?
A. The varsity team practices 6 days a week one to two times a day. Practices on the water are usually in the morning and practices on land are usually in the afternoon.
Q. Where does the team practice?
A. We practice on the Briones Reservoir which is about ten miles away from campus. When we practice on land it is usually on campus in our erg room or the weight room.
Q. Can you really be a successful student and athlete in college?
A. Yes! Most of our athletes find that the structure rowing provides helps them with planning and enables them to achieve higher grades. Among the rowing team's claims to academic fame are two of the top ten GPA's in the athletic department, a Fulbright Scholar, 13 members of the team on the WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll, 10 members on the All Academic All Conference Honor Roll and 7 members of the team on the Dean's List in the 2008-2009 season.
Q. When can I talk to coaches about rowing in college?
A. You can call or e-mail coaches at anytime; however coaches can only e-mail you back when you are a junior and return your calls when you are a senior.
Q. Are there height and weight requirements to be a rower in college?
A. There are no specific requirements, but you should keep in mind that rowing is a leverage sport so height and weight will affect your performance. Most rowers are 5'6" and above. However working hard, staying fit, and eating right are all great ways to ensure that you will be a successful athlete in college! If you are a coxswain you should be 110 lbs or less.
Q. I heard that Saint Mary's has great financial aid for students with good grades, where do I find out if I qualify?
A. You should go to the Saint Mary's College website and look under financial aid in the admissions section. Some of the financial aid opportunities include an automatic $12,000 for students who enter Saint Mary's with a 3.7 GPA and a SAT of 1200 or ACT of 27. Moreover, students who have a 3.8 GPA or higher and a SAT of 1350 or ACT of 31 qualify for an additional $10,000.
