ROW | Gaels Sweep All Nine Races at Hornet Invitational Against UCSD and Kansas State

LAKE NATOMA, Calif. — Back on the water at Lake Natoma, the Saint Mary's rowing team had an outstanding day of racing, winning all nine races that they competed in at the Hornet Invitational. Taking on the likes of UCSD and Kansas State, the Gaels enjoyed loads of improvement at an event in which they only won one race a year ago.

In a picturesque morning for racing that featured very little cross wind, the Gaels opened up their day with three wins against the Tritons. In the varsity fours, the Gaels narrowly edged UCSD by a 3.7 second margin. The gaps widened a bit in the second and first varsity eight groups, with the Gaels taking the 2V8+ race by 9.5 seconds, and the 1V8+ race by 15.2 seconds. The Gaels 3V8+ boat also raced in the 2V8+ race, taking third place over UCSD's 3V8+ boat. Below is a list of each boat's makeup for the races against the Tritons:

The wind began to pick up into the early afternoon, but that didn't seem to slow down the Gales against the Wildcats of Kansas State. Both Gaels four boats showed up, and showed out, with Saint Mary's 1V4+ boat besting that of Kansas State by 6.6 seconds, and the Gaels 2V4 boat outpacing the Wildcats'Novice 4 board by 42.5 seconds. In the 2V8+ races, both the Gaels 2V8+ and 3V8+ boats crossed the finish line ahead of the Kansas State 2V8+ and Novice 8 boats, while in the 1V8+ race, the Gaels completed the sweep with a 16.1 second win over the Wildcats. "Today our team really stepped up. We won all 9 of our races after only winning 1 race at this event last year." noted Head Coach Brian Ebke, "From freshman and novices winning races in the last 250, to seniors stepping up to keep this team improving every week, the whole team did an awesome job!" He went on to say, "We are really excited about where our speed is right now and know there's a lot more work to do in the next few weeks. We'll take a minute to enjoy a rare clean sweep and then get back to work on Monday!"

The Gaels will next be in action in two week's time, as they will take on the Lumberjacks of Cal Poly Humboldt in Arcata, California.
