
Women's Volleyball Record 13 Aces In Win Over Portland

Portland, OR - The Saint Mary's women's volleyball team found a new way to win on Saturday afaternoon. The Gaels made it six wins in a row, defeating Portland in straight-sets 25-19, 25-11, 25-20 at the Chiles Center. Saint Mary's recorded 13 aces on the day, second most in program history, but most in a three set match.
"Our objective is always to maintain a high level of focus and intensity every play of every match and the girls did a nice job of that tonight," said head coach Rob Browning. "Portland came out with a vengeance in the third set and they played great defense. I was proud of how our girls responded down 5-11, we outscored them 20-9 to finish the match. Props to Portland for stepping up and playing great at the end."
Leading the Gaels (16-6/8-1 WCC) deadly service attack was senior libero Kelly Huston and sophomore setter Missy White, who recorded four aces apiece. Huston finished the afternoon with the four aces and a team-high 12 digs. White finished the afternoon with the four aces, 13 assists and three digs.
Defensively, the Gaels tallied 11 total blocks, leading the way was senior middle blocker Shannon Lowell, who tallied eight total blocks. Lowell also threw down a team-high eight kills on 15 swings for a .400 hitting percentage. Natalie Loos and Jordan Shaw also recorded four total blocks each. Loos finished the day with three kills and an assist, while Shaw finished the day with one kill and one dig.
In the opening set the two sides battled to the tune of seven ties and five lead changes. SMC hit just .135, recording 11 kills on 37 swings, while the Pilots (9-16/2-7 WCC) hit .167 with 12 kills on the set. Megan York broke the tie at eight, throwing down her second kill of the set, putting the Gaels out front for good, 9-8. Huston tallied three of her four aces in the set helping push their lead to as large as eight at one point. Lowell sealed the first set, with her fourth kill of the frame, 25-19 SMC.
Saint Mary's owned the second set, the Gaels jumped out early and kept the lead, hitting .421 on the set, recording 10 kills on 19 swings, meanwhile the Pilots hit -.091, with seven kills on 22 attempts with nine errors. White tallied three of her aces, her second ace put SMC out front 10, 13-3. Jolly and Corp tallied four kills each on the set, with Jolly going a perfect 4-for-4 in the frame. A kill by Lowell closed out the second, 25-11.
In the final set, the Gaels hit just .050 on 12 kills, 10 errors, 40 swings. Portland hit .000 with seven kills, seven errors on 31 attempts. The pilots jumped out to the early 11-5 lead following a kill by Katie Hronek. Saint Mary's went on an impressive 20-9 run to take the set 25-20. Huston sealed the deal with her fourth ace of the match.
The Gaels return to action on Wednesday, November 3, when Saint Mary's travels to San Diego, CA to take on the Toreros at 8:00 PM. The match is going to be televised nationally on ESPNU.
