Moraga, CA - Saint Mary's head men's basketball coach Randy Bennett announced today the signing of Brad Waldow (Shingle Springs, CA) to a National Letter of Intent. Waldow, a 6-9, 265-pound center from Ponderosa High School located just outside of Sacramento, CA, will join the Gaels beginning with the 2010-11 season.
"We are excited to add a person of such high character and talent to our program," said Bennett. "Brad is an ideal fit for Saint Mary's, both academically and athletically. With the loss of Omar, we felt it was important to add another low post presence to the roster with this class."
During his senior season at Ponderosa HS, Waldow averaged a double-double, scoring 25.6 points and grabbing 10.7 rebounds per outing, ranking third and fifth, respectively, in the Sacramento area. The First Team All-Sierra Valley League selection was also a Third Team All-Metro selection by the Sacramento Bee, after shooting 72.2 percent (250-346) from the floor. He also averaged 2.0 blocks per game during the season.
Waldow was named the MaxPreps Player of the Week on Feb. 6, when he averaged 32.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks per game against Cordova and Vista del Lago High Schools. Against Cordova HS, he scored 39 points, has 16 rebounds, and converted 15-of-23 shots from the floor. Against VDLHS, he had 28 points, nine rebounds, six blocks, and shot 77 percent from the floor, converting 10-of-13 shots.
According to Scout, Inc, Waldow is rated fifth at the center position in the state of California, while the scouting report says; he has good feet, runs well, and plays with purpose on every possession. In the half-court set he turns over his shoulder very well and converts consistently. In addition, if the double team comes he passes very well and makes good decisions. The best aspect of his game are his hands. His hands are soft and he literally catches everything. Defensively, Waldow isn't much of a shot blocker, but he keeps his hands high and he knows how to "hedge" out when helping out on a screen.
Stephen Holt signed with the Gaels in the November early signing period. During his senior season, Holt was named the Oregon Class 6A Player of the Year after helping Jesuit High School to a 27-2 overall record, and a second straight Class 6A state championship. Holt is ranked 35th nationally as a point guard, with a 91 rating, according to Scouts, Inc/ESPN.com.
