MORAGA, Calif. - Four players scored in double-figures to lead the Saint Mary's men's basketball team to its sixth-straight win as the Gaels defeated Bethune-Cookman 77-52 in the first round of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic at McKeon Pavilion.
Saint Mary's improved to 8-1 on the season and will return to action Monday night against Kennesaw State in the second round of the eight-team event. Following a Tuesday night game against Eastern Washington, the Gaels travel to Las Vegas to face sixth-ranked Baylor and Missouri State.
Sophomore Jorden Page registered a second-straight impressive offensive performance, knocking down a team-high 15 points. Stephen Holt scored 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting and nabbed five steals. Junior Clint Steindl and senior Kenton Walker II added 10 points apiece to lead the Gaels.
Bethune Cookman (3-8) was led by Anthony Breeze's 15 points, while teammate Kevin Dukes added 11. The Wildcats play at Stanford Monday night.
The Gaels outrebounded B-CU by a wide 43-21 margin to win the battle inside the paint. SMC's interior players went 10-of-14 shooting for an impressive .714 from the field. Redshirt freshman Brad Waldow earned his first career start and scored six points with four rebounds in 11 minutes of action. Tim Williams played three minutes off the bench for his first action of the season after suffering an offseason injury.
