Following an outstanding weekend in which he received significant national attention, Saint Mary's senior guard Mickey McConnell was named the West Coast Conference Co-Player of the Week following his performances at Gonzaga and Portland.
A finalist for the Bob Cousy Award, given to the nation's top point guard, McConnell is among the national leaders in several categories and is a mid-season favorite for league player of the year honors.
McConnell was just one point shy of his career-high with 27 points in Saint Mary's 73-71 win at Gonzaga - the program's first in Spokane since 1995. The Mesa, Ariz. native hit the game-winning shot from about 12 feet out with just 1.2 seconds on the clock over outstretched 7'-0" defender Robert Sacre to clinch the 73-71 victory.
He followed that performance with a career-high 32 points at Portland two nights later. Against the Pilots, he went 5-for-9 from the three-point line and 11-for21 from the field. His first three pointers against Portland was one shy of his career-high.
For the two games last week, McConnell averaged 29.5 points, 4.0 assists and 3.5 rebounds with a +1.6 assist/turnover ratio in the two games. He shot .571 from the three-point line in the two games (8-14) and .553 from the field (21-38).
One of the top guards in the country, McConnell surpassed the 1,000-point mark for his career against Portland. He now has 1,027 in his career and ranks 23rd on the school's all-time list.
Saint Mary's returns to action Thursday in a WCC game against Pepperdine. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tipoff and a limited number of tickets are available by calling (925) 631-4392 or by clicking here.
