
Women's Rowing Places Third At WCC Championships

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - For the first time in program history the Saint Mary's women's rowing team had all three boats place in the West Coast Conference Championships. On a cool, windy morning at Sacramento State Aquatics Center on Lake Natoma the varsity-8, second varsity-8 and varsity-4 boats all finished third, giving the Gaels an overall finish of third place with 24 points.
"That's the first time we've ever had all boats in the top three at WCCs," said head coach Nicole Younts . "I'm proud of this team and especially happy for our seniors."
The morning kicked off with the varsity-4 boat at 9:20 AM. The fours finished third with a time of 8:30.5, which is the best finish a four from Saint Mary's has ever had under the current racing format. The lineup for the varsity-4 boat was: cox: Kaila Garza , 1 Ann Boyd , 3 Brandy Cho , 2 Olivia Hua and bow Chelsea Serrano .
The day continued with the second varsity-8 race 20 minutes later. The 2V8's placed third with a time of 7:24.2. The 2V8's came off the line tied for fifth with WCC newcomer Creighton. The Gaels eventually worked their way up to fourth by the thousand-meter mark when they made a move and passed LMU to move into third. The lineup for the second varsity-8 boat was: cox: Lisa Wickhem , 8 Rachel Alvarez, 7 Taylor Balian , 6 AnaKarina Castrillo, 5 Maryann Concannon , 4 Alex Iwaszewicz , 3 Nathalie Lambrecht , 2 Jillian Parlee and bow Nicolette Pierantoni .
The morning finished with a strong race by the varsity-8 boats. The Gaels finished in third with a time of 7:23.8. The eight's came off the start in third place and moved away from Creighton, Sand Clara and LMU to remain in third for the entire 2,000 meters. The lineup for the varsity-8 boat was: cox: Marrah Galvin , 8 Haley Adams , 7 Christina Bennett , 6 Jordan Bonadio , 5 Savina Brown , 4 Michelle Burns , 3 Dana Cook , 2 Deanna Estes and bow Laura Kocourek .
Senior Jordan Bonadio was named to the All-Conference Team following the races. It is the second-straight year she has received all-conference honors.
The Gaels return to the water tomorrow, for day one of the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships.
