MORAGA, Calif. -- The Saint Mary's rowing team is back in action this weekend, as the Gaels will square off with three teams as part of the NorCal/SoCal Showdown at Redwood Shores.
Action begins on Saturday at 11:50 a.m. when the SMC varsity 8 competes against Santa Clara. The second varsity 8 will hit the water at noon, and the varsity fours and novice fours will race the Broncos at 12:10.
On Saturday afternoon, the Gaels take on UC Davis. Varsity 8s get started at 4:30, with the second varsity 8 race and the varsity fours to follow.
Racing concludes Sunday when Saint Mary's faces San Diego State. Varsity 8s start at 10:30 a.m., followed by the second varsity 8 and then the fours.
The Gaels will look to carry forward the momentum gained in a strong weekend of racing from two separate meets held two weeks ago.
At the San Diego Crew Classic, SMC's first varsity 8 qualified for the grand final of the Cal Cup with a strong race on day one. The Gaels finished sixth in the final.
At the same time, the second varsity 8 found success in the Pacific Northwest. The Gaels defeated Puget Sound, then switched gears after their planned race against Willamette was scratched, cruising to victory in a race against novice competition.
After competing in the South Bay, Saint Mary's will travel to the Sacramento area next week to take part in the WIRA Championships at Lake Natoma.
