MORAGA, Calif. -- Saint Mary's volleyball coach Rob Browning announced this week that the Gaels have hired former director of volleyball operations Owen Monroy to become an assistant coach for the 2014 season.
Monroy will also continue his role as a sand volleyball assistant. He fills the indoor spot vacated by the departure of Brent Crouch, who left recently to become the head coach at Portland after five seasons as an assistant in Moraga.
"I want to thank Rob Browning for the opportunity to join such an exceptional program," Monroy said. "Saint Mary's College is a special place, and while the day to day culture of excellence fits perfectly in the Moraga hills, the results being achieved here are not so easily contained. I am excited to contribute to the volleyball tradition and feel honored to be a part of the Gael Athletics family."
Monroy joined the Saint Mary's program prior to the 2013 indoor season as its director of operations and made an impact in just a few short months. He came to the Gaels with an already impressive resume, having served as the volunteer assistant for 2012 NCAA semifinalist Penn State.
"Owen is an exceptionally good person and an outstanding volleyball coach," Browning said. "He is a student and teacher of the game. He is a remarkably hard worker, is truly passionate about coaching and teaching, and has already contributed significantly to our success over the past six months."
Before joining the staff at Penn State, Monroy was the first assistant at Westminster College (NAIA) in Salt Lake City, Utah. He assisted in all areas of technical coordination, recruiting, on-court coaching and operations.
On the professional level, Monroy was an assistant coach for the Utah Unity, which debuted in the inaugural tournament for the Premier Volleyball League at the 2012 U.S. Open. In 2011, he was a head coach with the USAV High Performance Indoor Program through the Intermountain Volleyball Association. Monroy also spent two summers as a head coach with USAV High Performance Beach and coached at the club level with High Country Volleyball Club from 2010-12 and with the Capital Area Volleyball Association from 2004-2008.
Monroy is a 2008 graduate of Messiah College in Grantham, Pa. As a collegiate player, he helped Messiah win the 2008 NIRSA Division II National Championship, as well as three Mid-Atlantic Conference Championships. He was a first team all-conference selection there, and ultimately returned to Messiah in 2013 as the men's associate head coach for a team that went 23-0 and won the Division II NCVF National Championship.
"What I always look for is the best person who is most qualified to help me achieve the primary goal: To create an environment in which all members of our team can thrive -- athletically, academically, and personally," Browning said. "I knew that we had our man right under our noses and did not need to search elsewhere. That's how much faith I have in Owen's abilities and in him as a person."
