SAN BRUNO, Calif. —Mary Hernandez and Alexis Salmons of the Saint Mary's College women's volleyball team were named Wednesday to the 2015 West Coast Conference Volleyball All-Academic Team, as announced by the conference.
Hernandez, a sophomore with a 3.41 Grade Point Average who has yet to declare a major, was the Gaels' starting setter all year long, finishing sixth in the conference in assists per set with 9.70. She totaled 883 assists during the season and also logged 203 digs. Hernandez was among the Gaels' top blockers as well, collecting 33 blocks.
Salmons, a sophomore communications major with a 3.27 GPA, led Saint Mary's with 82 blocks (seven solo, 0.83 blocks per set). She was one of four Gaels to surpass 200 kills on the year with 239. She also notched nine service aces and 58 digs.
WCC all-academic honorees are a big deal for us," said Saint Mary's head coach Rob Browning. "Balance is something that we stress continuously. We truly want our student-athletes to be great in the classroom and on the court, and also to represent themselves well socially and in the community. Alexis and Mary are well deserving of this recognition. I'm very proud of them for excelling in all these areas."
The 2015 WCC Volleyball All-Academic Team includes four student-athletes named to the all-academic squad for the second straight year and one whom captured 2015 Capital One Academic All-District 8 honors (BYU's Amy Boswell). This season, 15 nominated volleyball student-athletes posted a GPA of 3.50 or better while six recorded a mark of 3.75 or higher.
At the conclusion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each WCC-sponsored sport. To be considered, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while also being a significant contributor to her team.
