VB | Offense, Defense Both Improve Against No. 14 BYU

MORAGA, Calif. — For the second straight match the Saint Mary's volleyball team hung close with a nationally ranked opponent Saturday, but even with improved hitting and a tighter defense, No. 14 BYU was able to hold off the Gaels for a 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-23) West Coast Conference sweep at McKeon Pavilion.
Saint Mary's (10-15, 5-9 WCC) did not lose any set by more than six points and held leads in all three sets. In each set, Saint Mary's was within two points of the Cougars when they were five points or less from set point. The Gaels hit 41 points better than they did Thursday and had 11 more digs. SMC held BYU to under-.300 hitting for just the second time in its last six matches.
Lindsey Knudsen tied for the match high with 12 kills. Lindsey Calvin had 11 kills. Alexis Salmons had a team-high five blocks, including a big one late in the third set alongside Sienna Young that made it 24-23 BYU. Mary Hernandez posted her fifth double-double of the season with 18 assists and 12 digs. She also had two kills and a service ace.
McKenna Miller led BYU with 12 kills. Lacy Haddock posted 10 kills. Veronica Jones-Perry had a match-high six blocks to go with nine kills and an ace. BYU's defense tallied 10 total team blocks and 52 digs. Lyndie Haddock had 37 assists on the Cougars' 46 total kills.
The Gaels play their final home match of the season at 7 p.m. Thursday versus Pacific. Hannah Liserra will be honored in a pregame Senior Night ceremony as Saint Mary's lone senior. Tickets are available by visiting the Saint Mary's tickets web page or by calling (925) 631-GoTx.
