The Saint Mary's volleyball program announced the hiring of Angela Rock as the new head coach of the SMC beach volleyball team ahead of the 2017 season.
Rock played professional beach volleyball on both the Women's Professional Volleyball Association and Federation of International Volleyball tours from 1983-2000. She was named the WPVA's best hitter in 1991 and earned the organization's "Most Aces" award on three occasions. Her professional career included 21 WPVA tournament wins, 6 Association of Volleyball Professionals victories and two Beach Volleyball Association wins during an 18-year career.
Rock played for the 1988 United States indoor volleyball Olympic team in Seoul, South Korea. She was a first-team All-American at San Diego State in 1984. She helped lead the Aztecs to back-to-back NCAA Final Fours in 1981 and 1982.
Rock is the second Olympian to coach the Gaels' beach program after silver medalist Mike Dodd coached the Gaels in the 2014. Rock also has collegiate head coaching experience in indoor volleyball at both the University of Alaska in Fairbanks and at San Diego City College.
