SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Day one of the West Coast Conference Beach Volleyball Tournament is in the books, as the Gaels split with a 5-0 win against Pacific and a 4-1 loss to Pepperdine to punch their ticket to day two. Saint Mary's fans in attendance and tuned in at home got to witness a bit of history on the opening day of the event, as Hannah Couch broke the Saint Mary's program wins record.
The Gaels opened up their tournament slate by making quick work of the Pacific Tigers, 5-0. Hannah Glick and Barett Nolan got the scoring going early with a quick 21-14, 21-7 wins from the fives for their 20th win as a pair this season. Bella Reyes and Alisia Silverthorn finished shortly thereafter at the fours, winning 21-8, 21-17, while the top flight of Zoe Joshua and Genevieve Bane finished off the clinch point 21-19, 21-13. Clarissa Klein and Angelina Bour at the twos and Isla Johnson and Hannah Couch at the threes finished off the sweep with straight set wins. The win for Couch marked her 84th as a Gael, the most by any player in program history.
The second opponent on day one for the Gaels was the Pepperdine Waves, and as went the two regular season matchups, so went the postseason meeting, with the Waves defeating the Gaels 4-1. Alisia Silverthorn and Bella Reyes capped off an unbeaten day with a win over the fourth flight from the Waves in straight sets, 21-19, 22-20. Silverthorn and Reyes moved to 6-2 together on the season, including a 5-1 record when playing in the fourth flight.
The Gaels will play tomorrow at 11 a.m. in an elimination contest that could feature San Francisco, Santa Clara or Portland as the opponent. Saint Mary's has gone a combined 3-0 against these foes this season.
