Sept. 15, 2017 Box Score
SAN JOSE, Calif. - An early goal proved to be the ultimate difference, as Saint Mary's women's soccer dropped a close 1-0 decision at San Jose State Friday afternoon.
Today's loss moves Saint Mary's to an overall record, 3-5. The Spartans improve to 3-4 on the season, winning their final two non-conference matches of 2017.
Hannah Diaz led SMC with two shots on the day, as six other Gaels fired shots on the Spartans goal. Gabriella Hurtado scored the early strike for the Spartans, as all three of her shots found the frame.
The Gaels had two solid opportunities in the first half, as both chances were saved by Spartans keeper Paige Simoneau. In the 61st minute, Diaz nearly equalized the match, but her impressive shot found the crossbar as San Jose State preserved the single goal lead to the end.
THE GOAL
- San Jose State (1-0): At the 5:21 mark, Hurtado struck a low shot off a rebound header for her second score of the season.
THOUGHTS FROM Travis Clarke
- "We played really well in the first half, but gave up a goal that we don't normally give up. We had a few injuries that forced us to shift our line up around a bit and it was hard to get into a rhythm in the second half."
- "We had a few good scoring chances and were not able to capitalize on them. San Jose State is too good to not score those chances and win."
QUICK NOTES
