SAN BRUNO, Calif. - No. 22/20 Saint Mary's (27-4, 16-2 WCC) tied the program record for most league wins in a single season, set a program record 19-game win streak and placed three players on the All-WCC honors highlighted by senior Jock Landale being named West Coast Conference Player of the Year, it was announced today.
All four individual awards - along with the All-West Coast Conference Teams and the All-Freshman Team - were voted on by the league's 10 head coaches.
After leading the conference in points (21.5), rebounds (10.2), field-goal percentage (64.2), defensive rebounds (7.5) and double-doubles (17), Landale becomes the seventh Gael in program history to earn conference Player of the Year honors. LaRoy Doss (1959), Tom Meschery (1961), Steve Gray (1962 & 1963), Eric Schrader (1999), Mickey McConnell (2011) and Matthew Dellavedova (2012) are the other Gaels to earn the accolade.
Following his Associated Press All-American junior season, Landale has taken his senior campaign to another level as he is the active leader in the NCAA for field-goals made (262). The big man continues to be in the bidding for prestigious college basketball awards - John Wooden, Citizen Naismith Trophy, Oscar Robertson and Kareem Abdul Jabbar award.
Now the program's all-time leader in assists, senior guard Emmett Naar collects his second First Team honor of his career. The floor general has earned all conference honors in each of the past three seasons (First Team in 2015-16, Honorable Mention in 2016-17) and is one of 17 Gaels to have earned First Team honors twice in their career.
Naar led the conference in assists per game (8.1) and is currently second in the country in total assists (252). The senior recorded 10 double-digit assists games this season and is now second in all-time assists in WCC history behind San Francisco legend Orlando Smart (904).
Fellow senior Calvin Hermanson was honored on the Second Team as he again leads the Gaels in three-point shooting. The sharpshooter is third in school history with 236 career treys, and needs just three more to move into second all-time. Hermanson finished the regular season second in the conference for three point field-goal percentage (43.7). This season marks the second consecutive year Hermanson is honored on the All-WCC squad as he was named a First Team honoree in 2016-17.
Saint Mary's opens the WCC Championships on Saturday, March 3 at 9 p.m PT. The Gaels will face the winner between No. 7 Santa Clara and No. 10 Pepperdine on ESPN2.
