WSOC | Saint Mary's Battles Hard, Falls in OT

The Gaels and Highlanders took a scoreless tie into OT but UCR took the win the 99th minute on a long shot from well outside the box.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Saint Mary's and UC Riverside went down to wire on Friday night, taking a scoreless game into overtime but the Highlanders emerged victorious after a long shot from Maddy Feist ended the match in the the 99th minute.

The contest proved to be a defensive battle as neither team could generate much offense for the entirety of the game. Saint Mary's was held to just one shot in the game, taken by Jaylen Crim, while the Highlanders took only nine. Gaels' keeper Maleah Milner was forced to make two saves during the match.

There were also just five corner kicks between both teams as most of the contest was played in the middle third of the field.

Saint Mary's fell to 0-1 with the loss while UCR moved to 1-0.

Making their collegiate debuts in the match were Hailey Prentice, Kaytlin Brinkman, and Carly Hittenmiller. Each freshman came off the bench in the loss.

THE GOAL
As the first overtime session was coming to a close, Feist took a pass from Akari Shimizu and launched a shot from over 25 yards out to win the game for the Highlanders.

THOUGHTS FROM TRAVIS CLARKE
"That was a tough game against a tough UCR team. The game was played in the middle of the field and was physical and fast. Their shot to win their game was from very far out and was hit very well. It was unfortunate to lose the game that way but credit them for that strike."

"Maleah Milner was great in goal tonight. We need to do a better job finding ways to attack and get ourselves in dangerous positions. We will watch video and look to rebound against a really good Fullerton team."

UP NEXT: CSU FULLERTON
The Gaels will stay in SoCal for their next match against CSU Fullerton. The Sunday match kicks off at 5 p.m. and links to a live stream and stats can be found on the Gaels' schedule page.
