SAN BRUNO, Calif. — The West Coast Conference announced their Men's Soccer Player of the Week today for the period of Aug. 20-26 and selected Saint Mary's Anders Engebretsen in honor of his terrific play this past weekend.
Engebretsen was a force to be reckoned with on offense, scoring two goals and notching an assist in Saint Mary's 6-0 season opener against Incarnate Word which he then followed with a two-goal performance in the Gaels' 2-0 victory against Detroit Mercy on Sunday. The junior from Oslo, Norway also led the team with 10 total shots during the weekend.
Four goals already ties Engebretsen's season-high, a mark he reached as a freshman in 2014 when he and Joseph Restani tied for the team-lead. No Gael has scored more than six goals in a season since Michael Clegg scored 11 back in 2005.
Engebretsen's POTW recognition is the second of his career and Saint Mary's first since Jake Rudel earned the honor during Week 10 (Oct. 30) of last season. Engebretsen's first award came during Week 4 of 2017 when he scored the game-winning goal against Denver.
With two wins under their belt already, Saint Mary's is off to their best start since 2013 when they also began the season with two home wins against Air Force and LIU Brooklyn. The team will look to continue their strong play this week as they host Marist at 4 p.m. on Friday in Moraga. Tickets for the game can be found by
