GAELS OUTLOOK
Gaels Nearly Upset 12th Ranked Toreros…
The record may not show it, but Saint Mary's has been in every single match throughout the 2025 season earning six draws and having four of their six losses be decided by one goal. That theme played out again last Saturday in a tough 1-0 defeat to 12th ranked San Diego. The Gaels got outshot 13-8 in the contest but had six shot attempts in the first half and really dictated play over the first 45 minutes.
They were nearly rewarded for their efforts as senior captain Bastian Toelhoej seemed to give Saint Mary's the lead in the 28th with a right-footed finish off a ball over the top from Hubert Deragon. The center official would disallow the goal after video review and call a foul on the initial tussle with Toelhoej and the Toreros defender, taking away what felt like a well deserved goal.
The Gaels would rattle the side post shortly after the disallowed goal but the game remained scoreless going into the half. San Diego was much more dangerous in the second half and forced an own goal off a dangerous cross in the 82nd minute to help seal the one-goal victory.
Series History…
Saint Mary's has been quite dominant in their series history over the Zags, holding an 18-5-4 record over Gonzaga dating back to 2000. The Gaels have won ten of their last twelve matches dating back to 2014 but Gonzaga's last win did come at home, in a 3-2 contest back in 2023.
Saint Mary's handled Gonzaga in a 3-1 home victory last season which went down as their second win of the season. They'll look to do the same this season to give the Gaels some momentum heading into the final stretch of the regular season.
ABOUT THE BULLDOGS (4-6-3, 1-3-2)
Gonzaga enters the week with a 4-6-3 overall record and sit in a tie for seventh place with a 1-3-2 WCC record. The Zags have had an up and down season all year long, consistently trading off wins and losses. Key non-conference wins featured Incarnate Word, Oregon Tech and CSU Bakersfield before starting WCC play. Gonzaga then went winless over their first five conference matches with defeats to Portland, San Francisco and a 4-5 thriller to #23 Oregon State.
They were able to take some of that offensive success against the Beavers though and get their first conference win in a 2-0 victory over Pacific the next week to jump out of the bottom spot into seventh place. Statistically, the Zags are led by Drew Pedersen who leads the team with five goals and five assists. He's made ten starts and has played in all 13 matches. Robbie Mora and Alex Bazia are next in line with a combined seven goals with the trio accounting for 80% of the team's goals on the season.
First-year head coach Chris McGaughey has led the Zags in 2025 after being named the interim head coach back in January. McGaughey has been on staff with Gonzaga since 2023 after joining the program from CSU Bakersfield where he was an assistant from 2018-2022.
