Gaels Take Down Zags in Spokane…
Saint Mary's got their first win in Spokane since 2021 with a 1-0 score over Gonzaga for their final matchup as WCC foes. The Gaels outshot the Zags 15-7 in the match and forced five saves from their keeper. Saint Mary's has played tough in every match this season, recording a program high six draws but were able to get their first road win of the season.
Goalkeeper Sam Bentley started a quick counter attack late in the first half, sending a ball down the right side of the field to Gaige Gibbs. Gibbs did well to keep the ball and get down the right flank before serving a dangerous ball into the penalty box. Gonzaga tried to clear the ball but a challenge deflected it into the back of the net with just ten seconds remaining in the half. The goal went down as an own goal but was well deserved as Saint Mary's went on to complete the shutout, allowing just three shots from Gonzaga over the final 45 minutes.
Bentley got credit for his first clean sheet of the season and made a pair of saves in the process. Jaydon Whittaker led the team with four shot attempts, playing all 90 minutes, while Hubert Deragon, TJ Dilley, Fynn Allmon and Ian Smith played all 90 minutes to anchor the backline. The win moved Saint Mary's into a tie for fifth place at eight points along with Santa Clara. A strong finish could move the Gaels as high as third place with two games remaining.
Series History…
Saint Mary's owns a 6-2-2 record over San Francisco dating back to 2015. The Gaels saw their six-match unbeaten streak with the Dons come to an end last season after USF won 3-2 in Moraga for their first win over Saint Mary's since 2017.
Saint Mary's last won in San Francisco in 2023 with a three-goal victory. The Gaels surrendered multiple goals to the Dons in last season's match for the first time since a 2-2 double overtime draw in 2021.
ABOUT THE DONS (9-5-1, 4-3-0)
San Francisco enters the week with a 9-5-1 overall record and a 4-3-0 conference record, sitting in fourth place in the WCC standings. The Dons cracked the national top-25 poll earlier in the season and are back in the poll again this week, receiving votes ahead of their match with Saint Mary's.
USF has been a competitive team over the last several years, sitting in the top half of the WCC standings and now they are in the at-large conversation with an RPI of 35. Key wins throughout the season include #17 Cal back in August, San Jose State and four wins over their last six matches. The Dons have had a very difficult schedule with five ranked opponents including number one Stanford who they fell by just a goal to on October 22nd. A 2-0 stretch for the Dons to end the regular season could help clinch an at-large bid and their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2017.
San Francisco has two goal scorers with at least six goals on the season in Brayden Beason (7) and David Raphael (6). When either of the duo get in the scoresheet, the Dons are a combined 7-3 on the season. USF is led by head coach Chris Brown in his fifth season. Brown and the Gaels have some history as he was an Associate Head Coach under Adam Cooper from 2011-2021.
