SPOKANE, Wash. — Saint Mary's Men's Soccer earned their first road win of the season with a hard fought 1-0 victory over Gonzaga. The result continues the Gaels' strong record against the Bulldogs, as Saint Mary's has now won 11 of their last 13 games between the two programs.
The Gaels outshot the Zags 16-7, with freshman Jaydon Whittaker leading the attack and tallying four shots. The breakthrough came just seconds before the end of the first half, as relentless pressure from Saint Mary's forced Gonzaga into an own goal.
FIRST HALF SMC 1 - 0 GON
The first half of action was full of dangerous looks for Saint Mary's, with the Gaels creating multiple scoring opportunities and keeping Gonzaga on their toes. Just before halftime, goalkeeper Bentley launched the ball forward to Gaige Gibbs, who connected with Kayvon Monfared inside the 6-yard box. Their combined efforts and pressure caused Gonzaga to put the ball into their own net, giving Saint Mary's 1-0 the advantage heading into the break.
FINAL SMC 1 - 0 GON
In the second half, the Gaels continued to create opportunities, recording eight shots on the remaining 45 minutes of play. A late 80th minute attempt from Jona Starek almost found its way into the goal, but instead rattled the crossbar.
Full 90 minute efforts from defenders Hubert Deragon, TJ Dilley, Ian Smith, and Fynn Allmon, along with midfielders Jaydon Whittaker and Jona Starek, combined with two crucial saves from Sam Bentley, helped secure the shutout victory for the Gaels.
