GOLF | Gaels Add Three Newcomers For 2018-19

Saint Mary's will welcome three new faces this season in hopes of claiming another WCC Title.

MORAGA, Calif. — With the start of the 2018-19 golf season less than a month away, Saint Mary's will gear up and look to improve upon their second-place WCC Tournament finish from last year. Helping the Gaels reach that goal this year are three newcomers who will be replacing the four graduating seniors Saint Mary's lost in the spring.

ETHAN ASHBROOK, FRESHMAN
Ashbrook was a four-year letter winner at Saint Joseph and Ernest Righetti High Schools in Santa Maria, Calif. prior to arriving in Moraga. Ashbrook was twice named team MVP, reached the CIF qualifiers three times, and enjoyed multiple first-team all-league awards as a prep.

While playing as a junior, Ashbrook won the 2017 AJGA Engagic Championship by three shots at the prestigious Wilshire Country Club. Other notable finishes include multiple top-10's in Toyota Tour Cup events, a fourth place performance at the AJGA Junior at Centennial, and a seventh place showing at the AJGA Under Armour Allison Lee Championship. This summer Ethan showed his ability to compete successfully against Div. I talent with his tied fourth place finish in a strong field at the Bayonet & Blackhorse Championship.

Ethan plans to study Business Finance while at Saint Mary's.

RYAN GRAUMAN, FRESHMAN
Grauman graduated from the Athenian school in Danville, CA last spring after accumulating an impressive numbers of awards and recognitions during his high school tenure. Grauman enjoyed multiple league MVP awards, first team all-league awards, and a BCL East league tournament championship.

As a junior, Grauman won multiple tournaments including the FCWT Open at Bayonet, the JTNC Summer Series at Spanos Park, and the JTNC Summer Series I in Stockton. He also reached the round of 32 at the USGA Junior Amateur Championship in 2016.

The Bay Area native has also had a busy summer, playing in the PGA Junior Championship in Louisville and Web.com Tour event at TPC Stonebrae in Hayward this August. Grauman finished eighth in a field of 144 at the PGA Junior Championship and posted a 3-under par 67 in the second round at TPC Stonebrae. To top off his summer Ryan recently made a run at the NCGA Match-Play Championship at Spyglass Hill with a trip to the quarterfinals.

Ryan is undeclared heading into his freshman year at Saint Mary's.

ETHAN FARNAM, SOPHOMORE
Farnam comes to Saint Mary's as a sophomore after playing his freshman year at Northwestern. While with the Wildcats, Farnam played in two tournaments as an individual as well as the Big Ten Match-Play. His best performance came at the UNCG/Grandover Collegiate where he tied for 17th in a field of 76.

Prior to college, Farnam attended Prairie Ridge High School in Crystal Lake. Ill. As a prep, he won the Illinois State Junior Amateur Championship and finished second in the Illinois High School Association Class 3A Golf final. Farnam also tied for fifth at the AJGA Midwest Junior Players Championship, placed tied for sixth at the Golfweek Junior Tour Championship, and qualified for the USGA Amateur Championship at Olympia Fields. Ethan's most notable finish may have come at the 2017 Northern Amateur where he finished second in a strong field of 85 players that included many Div. I collegiate players.

Ethan plans to study Business while at Saint Mary's.

Saint Mary's will play their first tournament of the 2018-19 season Sep. 17-18 at the Showdown in the Rockies hosted at Huntsman Springs GC in Driggs, Ida. Links and more information for the tournament can be found on the Gaels' schedule page.

THOUGHTS FROM HARDY
"Some recruiting classes give a program the opportunity to develop and prepare players to compete at the Division I level and some classes allow a program to reload immediately. I feel this could be a class that qualifies as a reload instead of a rebuild. All three of these student-athletes are talented and tournament tested. I look forward to watching them compete as Gaels and helping them chase tournament titles."
